How cute in a powder room....

About a year ago, a friend of mine and I decided to set up a still life of random make-up items from her vanity.  The small paintings were quite labor intensive with lots of detail and tiny strokes.  Upon request this year, I was asked to paint them again.  This time....larger canvas and larger brushes.  Loads of fun!

APPLES OF BLOWING ROCK

When I was a little girl, I remember going on Sunday drives with my family to Big Bear Lake in Southern California.  Since I was a kid, I wasn't quite as enthusiastic as my parents were.  However, now, my memories are so fond of apple valley and the orchards.

Last weekend, while visiting Blowing Rock, North Carolina, those memories came back as I walked by the apple stands in the quaint little down town.

Here's the process of painting those memories...
I started with a 36x36 gallery wrapped canvas.

I began with a sketch in red over an orange toned canvas

Next. I loosely filled in areas with blocks of color





After that, I continued with a bit more detail, more color and contrast

Painted Horses

Don't know if any of you readers know, but I'm heavily involved in the Alzheimer journey.  My husband was diagnosed in his early 50's.  He is living in a memory care facility now.  He is 65. I often get calls and emails from the newly diagnosed.  It stirred up such emotion in me...to know the road they are about to travel.  More people are being diagnosed every day.  I'm angry and frustrated that not enough is being done to stop it.

Breaking Free

North Carolina is known for their wild ponies on the outer banks.  Ever since I was a little girl, I had a love for those magnificent beasts.  Such unbridled power!  Such beauty.  I was so obsessed horses that when I was in seventh grade, I threatened to run away if I didn't get a horse for Christmas.  (It didn't work.)  I got a violin instead.  Go figure!

ANYWHO..... I've wanted to paint them for a long time but am just beginning to dabble.  I can't paint them unless I've got a lot of emotion welling up inside of me.  Breaking Free is the first of a series.

The Road to New Bern

Once a year, I host an art show and fundraiser for Alzheimer North Carolina.  Alzheimer's Disease is near and dear to my heart and nobody seems to take this dreaded disease seriously.  Honestly, I think most people are in denial of their own mortality.  Alzheimer's disease is one of the most dreaded diseases in that there is no cure and it is devastating in every way thinkable.  Emotionally, financially, mentally, physically, extended family....it goes on for years and years.

My husband was diagnosed in his early 50's.  We are currently in our 14th year and he is now in the late stages.

Loading Up for Dixon-Kirby Parade of Homes

Almost ready!  Only need to load the car.  Eighteen paintings are framed, wired, varnished and ready to be stacked for their ride to Raleigh.
